Preface / Selection Procedure / Solos
Preface
Appropriate music is essential for the success of the band, choral and orchestra evaluation. To help assure that the music selected provides a realistic challenge at each conference level, the following guidelines have been established. While it may not be possible to totally adhere to these guidelines on all music selected, it is recommended that each sightreading committee approve compositions that as nearly as possible conform to the parameters provided.
Procedure
Panel to select sightreading music
A committee of five directors will be appointed in each division (band, choir and orchestra) to select the music for sight-reading evaulation. As many conferences as possible will be represented on each committee. While individual committee members may be charged with selecting music for a specific conference or grade, all music must be reviewed by the committee as a whole prior to final approval.
Number of compositions to be selected
It is recommended that all organizations of the same conference and organization event read the same music.
When appropriate, a selection may be used for more than one conference. (i.e. 3A, 3B and 3C could read the same selection.)
Criteria in Solo Passages
Band
No solos in any conference.
Orchestra
Levels I-II-III-IV - Conferences 1C-2C-3C-1B-2B-3B-1A/2A-3A-4A
A sightreading selection must not contain a solo passage intended to be played by only one student. The thought behind this guideline is that the sightreading event is a total group performance and the performance of one individual performing a solo passage should not affect the overall evaluation of the group’s performance.
Levels V-VI - Conferences 5A-6A
Eliminate solo passages for double reeds and mallets, unless the selection merits it and if substitution or doubling is cued in for another instrument or section. The thought behind this guideline is that the sightreading event is a total group performance, and the performance of one individual performing a solo passage should not affect the overall evaluation of the group’s performance.
Choir
All Conferences
A sightreading number must not contain a solo passage intended to be sung by only one student. The thought behind this guideline is that the sightreading event is a total group performance, and the performance of one individual performing a solo passage should not affect the overall evaluation of the group’s performance.
