Judging qualifications:
I have taught, coached, written curriculum, trained coaches and judges within the home school speech and debate league (NCFCA) for 20 years - for individual events (prose/poetry), CX, LD, and extemp. I have also taught at private schools in the North West Tarrant County Area - both teaching/training clinics, workshops, and camps. I volunteered as a judge for Byron Nelson in 2016-17 school year and judged both CX and LD. I have judged community college rounds (both individual events, LD, and CX) for TCC

Judging Philosophy

CX

Rounds judged: 0
Judging approach: Tabula Rasa
Policy priority: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Evidence philosophy: Quality of evidence is more important than quantity of evidence
Paradigm: It is the students responsibility to communicate. I will not judge anything that is not spoken into the round. I will judge the round how the students tell me to judge the round (if they want me to judge by stock issues or dropped arguments - then I will judge on that - but only if it is spoken into the round) I flow everything - and track arguments. I expect students to back up their arguments with empirical evidence or sound logic. In judging, I take into account who won the arguments -though a combination of evidence, logic, and persuasion.

LD

Rounds judged: 0
Approach: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Philosophy:
Much the same as in CX. I only judge what is brought into the round. I flow arguments and take everything said in the round into account. I like direct confrontation instead of two cases run side by side. I lean heavily on sound logic and persuasive speaking and do not expect empirical evidence.
