Judging qualifications:
I competed in LD Debate and Prose and Poetry during my own high school career, and now coach Prose and Poetry. Although I do not coach Debate, I love LD and keep up with each semester's topic. I use the topics in my own classes to facilitate discussions of current issues. In regards to Prose and Poetry, as a theatre teacher, I feel that this competition reinforces theatrical skills as well as the human capacity for empathy, which all students need more of. When they learn to step into another person's experience in order to properly convey a story, they increase their ability to do so in their everyday lives.
Judging Philosophy
CX
Judging approach: Policy Maker
Policy priority: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Evidence philosophy: Quantity of evidence and quality of evidence are of equal importance
Paradigm:
LD
Approach: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Philosophy:
As an educator, it is exceedingly important to me to enable the next generation to speak knowledgeably and clearly about topics that can be inflammatory. I believe LD teaches students this skill, and expect to see it demonstrated in their cases and cross-examination time.
