Approach: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Philosophy:
Debate should develop skills that a young person will use into adulthood. Knowing how to communicate your point effectively to a wide range of potential judges is critical. This means knowing how to effectively speak about an argument or philosophy to someone who may not know anything about the topic while still capturing its complexities. This means being well organized and precise in your arguments, not just repeating your points over and over. Students need to learn how to make precise statements and tackle nuance in an argument to prove their side. In judging a debate, I look for organization, clear communication, engagement with arguments on a deeper level than repeating the initial points, and strong evidence to support arguments.
