Judging qualifications:
In high school, membership in the Debate Team was predicated upon taking the Debate 1 and Debate 2 classes. In these classes, I was instructed in the techniques of all extemp, debate - both LD and CX - mock government, and prose and poetry events. I have 3yrs experience as a Lincoln Douglas debater and an extemporaneous speaker. I qualified for nationals in extemporaneous speaking within the National Forensics League - though the majority of my experience has been in UIL. Additionally, I've competed in CX, mock government, and prose competitions.

Judging Philosophy

CX

Rounds judged: 0
Judging approach: Policy Maker
Policy priority: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Evidence philosophy: Quality of evidence is more important than quantity of evidence
Paradigm: Of course quantity of evidence will bear out on my ultimate decision. However I am more inclined to be persuaded by teams that provide a good analysis of what their evidence means and how the evidence they present - no matter the quantity - weaves into their case. I am not a checklist judge matching up affirmative v negative citations to find the answer. Spreading is definitely not my style, though it won't keep a team from winning in my book, so long as their analysis is clearly argued.

LD

Rounds judged: 0
Approach: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Philosophy:
LD is called philosophy debate for a reason. I am interested in hearing an analysis of the ethics behind an issue and the suggestion of a path to follow in order to be aligned with good ethics. This being said, I am not a moralist in my opinion. I am interested in the path of reason followed by an argument. At the same time, the communication of reason is important. More so than policy debaters, I expect LDers to be persuasive in their delivery, though lack of charisma will not hinder a win.
