Judging qualifications:
I have coached Congress from the beginning and judged it as well. I started helping to run tournaments at 17. I’ve been judging since then CX, LD, Prose/ Poetry, Extemporaneous as well as other speech events. 38 years and counting. I helped my mother, an accomplished speech coach at Memorial Middle School, establish her debate team. I started coaching in high school in 1990.

Judging approach: Tabula Rasa
Policy priority: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Evidence philosophy: Quality of evidence is more important than quantity of evidence
Paradigm: Case should be well stated with a clear plan. Negative should be prepared to counter. I work hard to start with a clean, clear slate and take into consideration all the debaters say. I do take the policy and stock issues into account. Good argumentation is key. I am a flow judge. If I can’t understand you because of speed, I may miss an argument. I want clear argumentation and refutation from the debaters.

Philosophy:
I start with a clean slate setting aside my feelings and beliefs. I want clear, good arguments. I vote on whose arguments outweighed the opponent’s. Whose value and criterion’s are better supported. After I flow the debate, I also ask myself if this were a real world scenario, who made the best case based on the arguments that I have just heard.
