Judging qualifications:
My specialty in judging prose/poetry is to ensure the reader prepares the judge for the piece, navigates throughout with appropriate pacing, and has an appropriate portrayal of the scene/proper characterization. Prose/Poetry is about interpretation so I like the reader to interpret the piece with appropriate vocal variations, physical movements, however with respect to the intent of the author.
In extemp speaking, I put a lot of weight in the mechanics of the program. Please provide the prompt, supporting points/cases before the program begins. I want to understand the analysis behind the points being presented with sufficient use of logic and facts. Style and delivery are weighted heavily as we should not forget it is a speaking competition.
I was a reader throughout grade school, 3rd grade until high school graduation. Two-time district champion and state qualifier in Prose with a 5th place finish. Regional qualifier in Extemporaneous Speaking events. I have judged at several invitationals, district and regional speech tournaments in all classifications. I have worked with students individually the last several years, the list including several state champions.
