Judging qualifications:
I believe UIL offers students an educational opportunity. I try to fill my ballot with comments about the positive elements of a student's performance as well as suggestions for improvements.
On my extemp ballots I outline a student's speech so I can flow the logic of the speech, in addition to listening for strong delivery skills. I am a news junkie so I usually know the topics from the draw.
On my interp ballots, I follow the UIL ballot topics, and as a traditionalist, I listen for good introductions, quality literature that well-represents the student, and delivery skills which honor the author's intent, as well as highlights the student's talents. I studied interpretation with Rosanna Herndon and Vera May Simpson as a college student, and I have spent the last five summers working with Jana Riggins at the Texas Tech speech camp. These interp queens have definitely influenced my view of oral interpretation.
