Judging Philosophy
CX
Judging approach: Tabula Rasa
Policy priority: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Evidence philosophy: Quality of evidence is more important than quantity of evidence
Paradigm: The participants should determine the contours of the debate. Arguments should be logical, well-supported by evidence, and well-articulated. Actual addressing of the substance of the arguments made by opponents is of utmost priority. Straw-man arguments are not well-received. Style is important but not all-determinative. Polished speaking skills are not a substitute for critical thinking, argument, and evidence. A judge's personal philosophy plays no role in the outcome of the debate. The better-made argument and better debaters will prevail regardless of personal opinion on the subject matter.
