Judging Philosophy

Evidence philosophy:
Paradigm:
LD
Approach: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Philosophy:
Supporting a chosen value (while also demonstrating the chosen value affirms/negates the resolution) is ultimately the point a debate is decided on. My philosophy is that to support the value a debater must have and defend relevant contentions. I consider contentions to be the 'evidence' how affirming/negating the resolution will achieve the chosen value. Without evidence you do not have a valid case, so I like to focus most heavily on the contentions and the defenses and arguments debaters use when defending/attacking them. I do not place a large emphasis on debating / attacking / defending the criterion (unless a debater has an extraordinary point regarding it), but do use it to evaluate whether a given contention does support the chosen value. I do place emphasis on the debate of definitions when it is key to one of the cases. If a debater is able to turn their opponent's value/contentions I would place an extra emphasis on this in a case.
