Judging qualifications:
I coach speech at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, TX. I also serve as a volunteer coach for Academy High School. I have coached for 25 years, serving at UMHB, the University of Louisiana at Monroe, and Clinton High School and St. Andrew's Episcopal School in Mississippi. I competed all four years of high school, qualifying for NFL Nationals three of those years. As a coach, I have been awarded both the Texas Intercollegiate Forensic Association Educator of the Year and the Texas Speech Communication Association Teacher of the Year.
My philosophy is that students should show themselves to be strong communicators regardless of the unwritten rules unique to each UIL territory. I will uphold the written rules of UIL, but I will not play games with unwritten rules. Interp should draw the audience into the world of the piece. Extemp should include thoughtful, researched analysis. Both should exemplify strong oral and physical communication skills.
