Judging qualifications:
I participated in LD debate and extemporaneous speaking throughout all four years of high school. I competed at both district and regional levels within the 4A (now 5A) conference in both of these events. After high school, I assisted in judging some invitational competitions. I continue to be interested in philosophy, and I also continue to stay updated on world affairs. I feel fairly knowledgeable about various complicated philosophical topics and feel that I can be a fair and unbiased judge that is also able to offer constructive feedback to students so that they may improve their work. In terms of communication skills, I feel that as a medical student I have had to learn how to be confident and succinct in how I speak while still delivering complete thoughts to those I am speaking to. I feel that this experience can again help me offer useful feedback to high school students who are looking to improve their communication skills.

Approach: Resolution of substantive issues is more important than communication skills
Philosophy:
When I was participating in LD debate in high school, I feel that it was becoming an event centered more on policy. While I do not mind policy having some role within the debate, I do think that the idea of what should be done or what is right should be the main priority. I especially think that history can teach us a lot about our current issues and think that students should look to the past when trying to figure out how to debate a topic. Finally, I do think that debating issues and resolving those issues at the end of the debate is the most important to determining a winner. However, if a speaker is not able to communicate clearly and effectively so that I can actually follow along and understand their points, then I may not be able to declare them a winner.
