Judging qualifications:
I coached for 35 years and qualified over 100 students for State. I have judged regularly from 2011 to the present except for COVID year. I have coached and judged all speech events on every level for the last 45 years. I believe that communication is as important as performance. I consider myself a tabula rasa judge and attempt to judge each person on his/her performance on that particular day.
Judging Philosophy
CX
Judging approach: Tabula Rasa
Policy priority: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Evidence philosophy: Quality of evidence is more important than quantity of evidence
Paradigm: I believe debate is designed to debate the topic chosen. I want evidence to be current and by authorities on the issue. I believe clash is essential and tend to vote on stock issues. I seldom vote on topicality.
LD
Approach: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Philosophy:
I want more than the opinion of the student. While a preponderance of evidence is not necessary there must be enough to support the contentions of the case. Both speakers must clash and support their own cases while attacking that of the opponent.
