Judging qualifications:
I have been a speech and debate coach for 28 years, mostly in small conferences. I have 6 years of coaching at a large 5A high school as well. I believe that the experience of competing in speech and debate gives students the opportunity to excel in ways outside of the classroom. They learn higher-order thinking skills that will benefit them in later life. Being able to present ideas on a subject with evidence and support strengthens academic skills as well.
Judging Philosophy
CX
Judging approach: Stock Issues
Policy priority: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Evidence philosophy: Quality of evidence is more important than quantity of evidence
Paradigm: Debaters should convince me they have the strongest plan, that is well designed and thought out. I believe in the stock issues and that the affirmative has the burden of proof. Analysis and presentation of arguments backed up with solid, credible evidence is paramount.
LD
Approach: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Philosophy:
I believe that LD is not a policy debate, but a value debate. The value and criteria arguments are the most important. Philosophical presentations are important as well. All the contentions or points should uphold the value.
