Judging qualifications:
I coached many academic events throughout the 34 years before retirement, but I consistently coached extemporaneous speaking, which was always my passion. I don't recall a single season when I did not advance speakers (usually entire teams) to regional and several times to state. I had several students place in the top six at state with one student placing first, which was a definite thrill of my career. I feel very strongly about the value of the requirements for being apprised of current events, being able to organize a speech in a timely manner, and to present an engaging delivery. The lessons learned by my students have proven to be beneficial/life-changing in many careers. To say the least, I am an advocate of all UIL academic contests but in particular the speaking events.
