Judging Philosophy
CX
Judging approach: Policy Maker
Policy priority: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Evidence philosophy: Quantity of evidence and quality of evidence are of equal importance
Paradigm: Effective communication is critical in the round, both the build speaker/team crdibility and to address both lines of documentation and persuasion that need to be developed in order to be successful. Effective rebuttals are direct, specific, and can prioritize major issues in order to focus and shape the team discourse.
LD
Approach: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Philosophy:
After case reading initially, student ability to prioritize effective points and engage their opponent in a way that highlights major issues and sheds light on flaws in the opponent's argument are critical to success in LD. The interchanges are not scripted, and they are indicative of a mind that can think quickly and critically, then respond in an organized, direct way. Those debaters usually prevail.
