Judging qualifications:
I qualified and competed at TFA State 3 years in a row in CX. In addition, I qualified and competed at UIL State and NSDA Nationals in both CX, Extemp and Congress, my last 2 years in high school and attended the UTNIF camp multiple times. Although I haven't judged much this season, that's only been due to my busy schedule at university. I've judged all the events I competed in as well as LD and PF. I am a tabula rasa judge in every event, trying to keep judge intervention as low as possible. I am a philosophy major, so my knowledge of literature and argumentation is quite broad. My specific philosophy can be found on my Tabroom paradigm.
Judging Philosophy
CX
Judging approach: Tabula Rasa
Policy priority: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Evidence philosophy: Quality of evidence is more important than quantity of evidence
Paradigm: I am familiar with both traditional and progressive styles of debate, and competed in both. Spreading can be up to warp speed as long as it's clear. Tech over truth, but quality of evidence and argumentation still matters. I don't enjoy generic arguments or arguments used as a time-suck. Impact calculus/comparison is a must to create proper offense/defense. I am very open to competitors experimenting with new literature and arguments, if and only if they know them and can explain them well. I am well-read on both advanced policy and kritiks and am happy to judge either! I'm finishing a BA in Philosophy and will be working on a PhD afterwards, so I study both areas on a professional level. Overall, I want competitors to do what they do best and have fun!
LD
Approach: Resolution of substantive issues is more important than communication skills
Philosophy:
I am most familiar with more policy-style (progessive) LD. That said, I still want to see strong framework, as this is especially important in LD. Value/value criterion clash is what differentiates LD from other forms of debate. If competitors don't wish to engage with these issues, experimental and/or progressive arguments must be run well. Just because I am a policy judge by trade does not mean I will enjoy a poorly run DA or K.
