Judging qualifications:
Before switching to higher education, I taught English 1 for three years. I coached CX and LD debate during those three years. In addition to coaching, I judged both LD debate, CX debate, and Prose and Poetry at multiple invitational and district meets. Judging debate and other academic UIl events is just an extension of coaching. As someone who doesn't directly coach these students, an outside eye can be incredibly helpful in identifying areas of growth. It is important to provide as much constructive feedback as possible and include clear action steps for how to grow in those areas. In addition, judges should tell the students what areas they are already excelling in.

Judging Philosophy

CX

Rounds judged: 2
Judging approach: Stock Issues
Policy priority: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Evidence philosophy: Quantity of evidence and quality of evidence are of equal importance
Paradigm: I judge based on how well debaters know their case. Can they thoroughly explain harms, topicality, inherency, and solvency? It is even more important that students are able to defend their own arguments with evidence-based arguments. While most of these are encompassed by being a stock issues judge, I also take advantages over disadvantages into consideration.

LD

Rounds judged: 5
Approach: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Philosophy:
I judge LD based on how well debaters can effectively carry their value and criteria through the debate. It is even more important that students are able to defend their arguments using their criteria and value. This tells me they are able to correctly analyze sometimes unclear statements provided by their opponent and be able to strategize a response that is sound and supported.
