-I am open to the students interpretations of what the event should be, I only ask that they make the intentions of their performance or style of debate clear and that they clearly follow the methods and mantras that they outline. We are supposed to as adjudicators let the students have some semblance of fun and comfort in the round, where our role comes in is in deciding whether they've defended their interpretation of the event enough for us to reward them. I am much more easily swayed by confidence and charisma than other judges I would go as far as to say, to the extent that confidence and charisma never trumps logic and rationality.
Judging Philosophy
CX
Judging approach: Tabula Rasa
Policy priority: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Evidence philosophy: Quality of evidence is more important than quantity of evidence
Paradigm: -I do not have extensive experience in CX. I participated in NSDA TFA Public Forum debate and received a silver bid to the tournament of champions otherwise no experience in partnered debate.
LD
Approach: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Philosophy:
-I prescribe to the ideas of former judge Jonathan Daugherty. It is about execution. You should provide your interpretation of what you believe the affirmative / negative should do, and then defend that interpretation. The winning debater almost always succeeds on this front, with drops contributing to a poor understanding of debate as a game and a poor handling of an opponents interpretation.
