Judging qualifications:
I have competed in LD and Extemp and made it to regionals for extemp twice in high school. In addition I have listened to and critiqued several of my classmates doing both types so I have a lot of background in those two events. And I have friends and former teachers who have more background in CX and Congress and hope to be able to use them to get more of an understanding of it myself. I have also done the training and everything on tabroom except for CX so I have a decent understanding of the requirements to be a judge
Judging Philosophy
CX
Judging approach: Tabula Rasa
Policy priority: Resolution of substantive issues is more important than communication skills
Evidence philosophy: Quality of evidence is more important than quantity of evidence
Paradigm: I am not very experienced in CX but I have the basic idea of it and want to be able to learn how to judge it. But I want it to be pretty straightforward and be able to defend the topic. Stock cases are perfectly fine and I am ok with spreading as long as I have a copy of the case to follow along with
LD
Approach: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Philosophy:
Just make sure it is a value debate. Argue over the values of the case and use philosophy and statistics as important tools but should not be what defines your case
