Judging qualifications:
I did speech and debate for 3 years at a 6A high school in area 1. During my time in high school I did every single event offered by UIL in speech and debate, I also did theater. I was a UIL regional finalist and broke to double octos at Nats in Prose, I was a UIL regional qualifier in persuasive extemp and broke to octos at Nats in FX, I was state qualifier for congress in both UIL and TFA, I was a UIL regional qualifier to regionals in LD 2 years in a row and in my senior year was the 17th seed at UIL CX State (so tough). I've also judged a few tournaments this year and hope to judge a lot more:)

Judging Philosophy

CX

Rounds judged: 3
Judging approach: Stock Issues
Policy priority: Resolution of substantive issues is more important than communication skills
Evidence philosophy: Quality of evidence is more important than quantity of evidence
Paradigm: I'm most comfortable with STOCK issues. I'm not super comfortable with crazy fast speed, and I'll take off speaks if you do spread like crazy. Being UIL I'll want you to do more to try to convince me of the point through quality communicative skills, but if its between a good speaker who hasn't resolved the issues of the debate and a really poor speaker who has, my decisions is for the latter every time. If you run a theory or K I'm willing to vote on it just know I'm not very familiar with much K lit at all. Last speech should have a section dedicated to telling me what I'm voting on and why.

LD

Rounds judged: 3
Approach: Resolution of substantive issues is more important than communication skills
Philosophy:
Yay! LD, yippie! I'm pretty heavy on framework, which is to say, that I think the big difference between LD and CX is the importance of framing. I love seeing interesting frameworks that I haven't encountered before. I believe that to win the debate you have to generate offense and the only way to generate offense is to have (at least) one contention that accesses the framework of the round, so don't throw the framework debate unless you're confident your can access offense through their framework. If both of you can access offense, get to weighing! Tell me why I prefer your side. In your last speech, make sure some of your time is used to tell me what I'm voting on and why
