Judging qualifications:
I coached CX and LD for 17 years and Congress for 8+ years. Along the way, I also judged Extemp and Interp because that is just what you do at Invitational meets. I had state qualifiers in CX and Congress numerous times and LD qualifiers to the regional out rounds. I am keeping current on the LD and CX topics so that I can judge this year.
Judging Philosophy
CX
Judging approach: Policy Maker
Policy priority: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Evidence philosophy: Quantity of evidence and quality of evidence are of equal importance
Paradigm: If the Aff presents an alternative to the SQ that it shows will accrue more advantages than disadvantages, I will vote for the Aff. If the Neg shows that the Aff's plan is not workable or topical or will accrue more DAs in solving the identified issue, then the Neg wins. Not a fan of speed but if I can flow (on paper with pens), okay.
LD
Approach: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Philosophy:
I appreciate a value debate. Show me how your case upholds your value and criterion better than your opponent's and you win. Speed has NO PLACE in LD.
