I have been Judging all categories of Speech and Debate for the past 14 years. I have judged for UIL, TFA, NSDA, TAPPS, and independent events like The Earth Day Debates.
As far as qualifications go, I competed in speech, debate, and choir, in high school and college. I was a professional actress for a while in my early 20's. I have been a communications program manager for Landmark World Wide empowering people in their like and helping them create non-profit projects and organizations world wide. I have a background in children's and youth ministry. I have lectured and spoken at the local, national and international level.
I am passionate about communications and how it empowers people to make a profound difference in the world. My ballots are designed to give feedback to both encourage the student and to help them take there skills to the next level.
Judging Philosophy
CX
Judging approach: Other (please explain below)
Policy priority: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Evidence philosophy: Quality of evidence is more important than quantity of evidence
Paradigm: I am old school at heart because I believe it is important to build powerful speaking and real world analysis skills. These empower the student to make a difference in the world, using their developed super powers. I do see the value in thinking outside the box and strategically. Progressive argumentation is valuable when done well. Articulation is key, and sign posts and tags make it easier to flow. I personally flow rounds, as I believe listening to be a critical skill. I have seen many rounds where students read and really miss what is actually going on in the round.
LD
Approach: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Philosophy:
We remember leaders like Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr because the power to communicate a moral imperative, painting the picture of the world as it is or as it should be, appeals to the deepest sense of nobility within all of us. We all want to make a difference and speaking from our "WHY" is very powerful. Done well, it is a beautiful thing and changes the world.
