Judging qualifications:
In terms of qualifications, while I am new to judging, as a classroom teacher and former speech competitor myself, I do have a solid background in various aspects related to speaking, language, communication, and evaluation based on established criteria. While I emphasize both content and delivery, I strive for fairness, impartiality, and constructive feedback to help speakers improve. I am familiar with the typical formats and rules associated with UIL speaking events. Here are several key elements I look for in a performance: Clear, engaging, and a well-organized speech that offers organized, insightful, and original content. A strong delivery with a clear, confident voice, effective body language, and good pacing. Speakers that connect with their audience emotionally and intellectually, using language and rhetorical devices that enhance their message. Speakers should be mindful of time limits, and remember that a compelling argument, backed by solid evidence, is key.
