Corpus Christi (12-0-1) vs. Lubbock (11-1)

Notable Performances: Corpus Christi: Jesus Garza (TD-Receiving; TD-Passing).
Game Recap: Heralded as one of the best teams ever from South Texas, Corpus Christi jumped out to an early 7-0 lead with a first quarter touchdown pass. Jesus Garza was on the receiving end of the Emery Nix touchdown strike. Garza took his turn throwing the ball, finding Pat Hall for a 21-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter. Lubbock fought back with a touchdown of its own in the third quarter to cut the Buccaneers lead to 14-6. However, an interception just before the start of the third quarter by Corpus Christi set up the Buccaneer’s third touchdown to put the game out of reach. Lubbock would fumble the ball four times as its offense seemed out of sorts.

 

 

Lubbock (8-3-1) vs. Waco (11-0)

Game Recap: After losing in the state championship a year earlier, Lubbock was determined to take home the title this year but were pitted against four-time champion Waco. The Westerners raced out to a 13-0 lead in the first half on touchdown runs by Howard Alford and Joseph Tyson. In the third quarter, Waco battled back scoring two touchdowns to take a 14-13 lead. However, Lubbock was not to be denied as Alford scored again on s 39-yard touchdown run to seal the game in the fourth quarter. Former Lubbock Head Coach Weldon Chapman passed away in the middle of the season. The victory was the first state title for the Westerners.

 

 

San Angelo (12-0) vs. Dallas Highland Park (12-0)

Game Recap: A star-studded Highland Park squad headed out west for a matchup with San Angelo for the right to advance to the state championship game. The Scots struck first on a 45-yard touchdown pass from Bobby Layne to Doak Walker for a 7-0 lead. The Colts knotted the score on a touchdown run by Jeep Graham. A touchdown run by Layne in the second and third quarters gave Highland Park a 20-7 advantage. Late in third quarter, San Angelo’s Graham scored again to cut the lead to 20-14. Trailing in the fourth quarter, the Colts’ Mickey Rathbone attempted a lateral that bounced off a referee, which Rathbone picked up and scored the eventual winning touchdown to stun the favored Scots.

 

 

Dallas Highland Park (11-1-1) vs. Port Arthur (12-1)

Game Recap: Port Arthur held Highland Park on its opening drive deep in its own territory, then marched 75 yards for a score capped off by a 20-yard run from Don Campbell. Midway through the third quarter, the Yellowjackets drove 65 yards, with Tommy Thrower racing the final nine yards for the TD to give Port Arthur a 13-0 lead. The Scots fought back with 23-yard touchdown pass from Doak Walker to Harold Clark late in the third quarter to cut the lead to 13-7. Port Arthur, however, clinched the upset win with a fourth quarter touchdown run by Ike Neumann.

 

 

Dallas Highland Park (12-0-1) vs. Waco (12-1)

Game Recap: In one of the most highly attended state championships in UIL history both team’s defenses came to play. The Highland Park defense made the first big play of the game, forcing a fumble at the Waco 23-yard line. Bill Elliott scored a few plays later on a 1-yard scoring run. The Tigers knotted the score in third quarter on a 86-yard touchdown pass from Clifford Lindloff to Froggie Williams. Both defenses held strong for the majority of the game, but a late Waco rally almost gave the Tigers the title. Waco drove to the Scot 20-yard line but Williams missed a 37-yard field goal. The two teams were declared Co-Champions.

 

 

Houston Lamar (10-0-2) vs. Odessa (9-1-2)

Notable Performances: Houston Lamar: Walt Fondren (145 yards, 2 TD-Rushing), Dickie Bergstrom (2 TD-Rushing).
Game Recap: Odessa came out swinging first, scoring the first touchdown early in the second quarter. A Lamar fumble set the Bronchos up in enemy territory to start the scoring drive. From there though, Houston Lamar dominated the rest of the game, taking a 13-7 halftime lead. They then proceeded to outscore Odessa, 20-0 in the second half to run away with the contest. Odessa came into the contest with arguably the best passing attack in the state, but the Redskins defense held the Bronchos to 61 yards passing, while forcing two interceptions and three fumbles. The state championship was the first for a Houston-area school in 33 years.

Notable Performances: Port Neches-Groves: Gordon LeBoeuf (212 yards, TD-Rushing), Bobby LaBorde (103 yards, TD-Rushing).
Game Recap: After an eventful first half which saw both teams miss chances deep in the other’s territory, Garland took control of the game, scoring twice in the third quarter. Port Neches-Groves finally got its offense rolling in the fourth quarter and staged a comeback for the ages. The Indians finally broke through with just over nine minutes remaining on a Bobby LaBorde touchdown run. After blocking an Owl punt, Port Neches-Groves took over in Garland territory. A 32-yard TD run by Gordon LeBoeuf reduced the score to 14-13, with seven minutes remaining. The Indians set out on their game-winning drive and were at the Owl 3-yard line. Port Neches-Groves surprised Garland with a 3-yard touchdown pass from Bobby Falgout to Nolan Adams for the winning score. The title was the second in three years for the Indians.

 

 

Austin Anderson vs. Dallas Washington

Notable Performances: Austin Anderson: Frank Washington (106 yards, 3 TD-Rushing), Willie Williams (56 yards, TD-Rushing).
Game Recap: Dallas Washington was looking to capture its second state title, but Austin Anderson had other plans. The Trojans turned Washington over three times in the opening quarter and converted all three miscues into touchdowns to take a 20-0 lead. Anderson added another touchdown in the fourth quarter for good measure as the Trojans won their second title in school history.

 

 

Dallas Highland Park (10-1) vs. Abilene (12-0)

Dallas Highland Park 20, Abilene 20 (Highland Park won on penetrations)
Game Recap: Abilene came into the state semifinal matchup with Highland Park on a 49-game winning streak, and had won the past three state titles in Conference 4A. The Eagles started off the game with a touchdown run by Chuck Colvin in the first quarter. Highland Park fought back with a touchdown run of its own by Johnny Florer late in the first quarter to take a 7-6 lead. The Scots increased their lead in the second quarter with another touchdown by Florer to bring the score to 14-6. Abilene pushed a score across just before halftime to inch closer, 14-13. The Eagles took back the lead in the third quarter on a 77-yard touchdown pass from Freddie Martinez to Stan Cosby for a 20-14 advantage. Abilene looked to have clinched its fourth-straight title game appearance, but the Scots had other ideas. Highland Park’s Bobby Reed found Jack Collins in the final minute for a game-tying 59-yard touchdown pass. The Scots would advance to the state title game based on a 5-3 penetrations edge over the Eagles. They would also go on to win their second state title.

Game Recap: Baytown Carver took the early lead, scoring on a 90-yard interception return by Eugene Washington and a 40-yard touchdown run from Floyd Wheatfall. Fort Worth Kirkpatrick tried to get back in the ball game with an 8-yard touchdown run from Johnny Jones in the second quarter, but a late 47-yard touchdown pass for Carver from Leon Carr to Sam Brown put the game on ice. The title was the third for the school and Head Coach Johnny Peoples.

 

 

Donna (12-2) vs. Quanah (14-0)

Notable Performances: Donna: Freddy Edwards (2 TD-Rushing); Quanah: Danny Scarbrough (141 yards, TD-Rushing).
Game Recap: Quanah jumped out early on Donna, scoring in the first quarter for a quick 7-0 lead. Two touchdown runs by the Redskins in the second quarter gave Donna a 12-7 halftime lead. This was the first time all season Quanah had trailed. The Indians raced back ahead in the third quarter pushing across two touchdown runs to give Quanah a 21-12 lead. Trailing by nine in the fourth quarter, Donna rallied with two long methodical touchdown drives down the stretch to give the Rio Grande Valley its first state championship.

 

 

Pflugerville vs. Somerville

Notable Performances: Pflugerville: Joe Weiss (146 yards, 6 TD-Rushing; 94 yards-Passing).
Game Recap: In a game that was never in doubt, Pflugerville capped off a perfect 10-0 regular-season with a blowout victory. With both teams vying for the district crown, it was the Panthers who poured it on in the scoring column. After taking a 28-16 lead at halftime, Pflugerville outscored Somerville, 30-0 in the second half. The win gave Pflugerville a 55-game winning streak that set a national record.

 

 

Fort Worth Kirkpatrick vs. Galena Park Fidelity

Game Recap: Fort Worth Kirkpatrick got on the scoreboard in the first quarter on a 10-yard touchdown pass from James Millard to Ronald Bailey. That score would hold up the rest of the way as the Kirkpatrick defense held Galena Park Fidelity out of the end zone the entire game. The victory was Kirkpatrick’s first in three tries in the state championship game. They would go on to repeat in 1963 as well.

 

 

 San Antonio Brackenridge (8-2) vs. San Antonio Lee (10-0)

Notable Performances: San Antonio Lee: Linus Baer (150 yards, 3 TD-Rushing; 94 yards, TD-Receiving, 95-yard Kickoff Return). San Antonio Brackenridge: Warren McVea (215 yards, 6 TD-Rushing)
Game Recap: In a cross-town matchup in the first round of the playoffs, both teams put on an offensive show for the ages. Defending champion Brackenridge found themselves in a 34-19 hole at halftime. But the Eagles came roaring back in the second half behind the running game of Warren McVea to knot the score midway through the fourth quarter, 48-48. McVea’s touchdown with just over six minutes remaining in the contest was his sixth of the game. Lee decided to slow things down offensively and controlled the ball on a long scoring drive. Larry Townsend plunged in for a 2-yard score with 18 seconds left to give the Volunteers the 55-48 upset win over Brackenridge.

 

 

Plano (12-1) vs. Phillips (11-1)

Notable Performances: Plano: John Griggs (116 yards-Rushing); Phillips: Mark Hatley (127 yards, TD-Rushing).
Game Recap: Plano opened the scoring midway through the first quarter as Phillips return man Kelly Cooke was tackled in the end zone by Plano on a punt return for a safety. The Wildcats tacked on a touchdown with a 38-yard run by Alex Williams for a 9-0 lead. Plano increased its lead to 15-0 on another Williams touchdown jaunt from three yards out. Phillips chipped away at the lead scoring on a second quarter 56-yard touchdown run by Mark Hatley to make the score 15-6. A late 2-yard touchdown run from Phillips’ Jackie McClellean brought the score to 15-13 with 8:25 left to play. The Blackhawks had a chance to win the game but missed on a 38-yard field goal attempt with 52 seconds remaining. The Wildcats would advance to the state championship where they would capture their second of seven titles in school history.

 

 

Austin Reagan (13-0) vs. Abilene Cooper (13-0)

Notable Performances: Austin Reagan: Johnny Kleinert (TD-Rushing; KO Return TD); Abilene Cooper: Jack Mildren (2 TD-Rushing, TD-Passing).
Game Recap: An upset-minded Austin Reagan squad started the game off right with an opening kickoff return for a touchdown by Johnny Kleinert. Ranked No. 1 in the state all season, Abilene Cooper showed its mettle by scoring three touchdowns in the first half to claw back for a 19-7 halftime advantage. Jack Mildren led the Cougars with two touchdown runs to go along with a touchdown pass. The Raiders responded in the second half with two scores to take a 20-19 lead. The second TD came with just under five minutes to play in the game. Mildren then proceeded to lead Abilene Cooper all the way down to the Raider 1-yard line. Mildren was stopped short of the end zone on the game’s final play to give Austin Reagan its first state title.

 

 

Plano (12-1) vs. Gregory-Portland (11-0)

Notable Performances: Plano: Pat Thomas (149 yards, 2 TD-Rushing); Gregory-Portland: Marty Akins (191 yards, TD-Passing; TD-Rushing), Mike Crosswhite (9 rec., 173 yards, TD-Receiving).
Game Recap: In a back-and-forth game, Plano struck first, scoring on a 1-yard plunge by Pat Thomas to put Plano ahead, 7-0. Gregory-Portland answered with a 57-yard bomb from Marty Akins to Mike Crosswhite to bring the score to 7-7. Gregory-Portland took a 14-7 lead at halftime after a touchdown run in the second quarter that was set up by a Plano fumble. Another Thomas touchdown run in the third quarter knotted the score, 14-14. Gregory-Portland took back the lead with an Akins 1-yard run late in the third quarter but the extra point was missed. Plano capitalized by marching down and scoring on a 1-yard Rucker Lewis touchdown run. The extra point was true giving Plano a 21-20 lead. Gregory-Portland scrambled down the field in a hurry and had a 35-yard game-winning field goal attempt by Akins miss wide right. The state title was the third in school history for Plano.

 

 

Wichita Falls (14-0) vs. San Antonio Lee (13-0-1)

Notable Performances: San Antonio Lee: Tommy Kramer (257 yards, 3 TD-Passing); Wichita Falls: Ronnie Littleton (181 yards, 2 TD-Rushing).
Game Recap: In a title rematch from two years earlier, it was Wichita Falls who struck first on a 10-yard run by Ronnie Littleton. San Antonio Lee fought back with Tommy Kramer leading the way. The quarterback tossed two touchdown passes in the second quarter to give the Volunteers a 14-6 halftime lead. Richard Osborne opened the second half with an 86-yard kickoff return for a 21-6 Lee lead. The Coyotes then went to work, surprising Lee with two third quarter touchdowns and another touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 15-yard Gary Lancaster scoring run with 6:38 left to play. Kramer and the Volunteers would not be denied as they rallied to score with just over two minutes remaining to take a 28-27 lead. A Lee interception on the next Coyote drive sealed the game for the Volunteers. The title would be the first for Lee in school history and it avenged the loss two years earlier to this same team.

 

 

Uvalde (12-0) vs. Brenham (13-0)

Game Recap: In a matchup of unbeaten teams, it was Uvalde who raced out to a 21-14 lead at halftime. However, Brenham seemed to always have an answer, scoring touchdowns in the first and second quarter, along with another scoring strike in third quarter to tie the score, 21-21. Trailing in penetrations, 5-3, Uvalde used a well-time “fumblerooski” play to score on a 69-yard touchdown run by Richard Sanchez with almost seven minutes to play. The Coyote defense held from there as they advanced to the state championship game where they would win the school’s only football title.

 

 

Temple (11-0) vs. Sherman (10-0-1)

Temple 26, Sherman 26 (Temple won on penetrations)
Game Recap: Trailing 26-14 with three minutes to play, Temple embarked on one of the biggest late-game comebacks in UIL playoff history. The Wildcats drove 55 yards for their first score to bring the score to 26-20. After recovering the onside kick, Temple again drove through the Sherman defense and knotted the score up on a 7-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Harmon to Lester Ward. Sherman blocked the extra point to keep the game tied, but Temple won the tiebreaker on penetrations, 6-5. The Wildcats would advance all the way to the state title game before their season came to an end in 1976.

 

 

Plano (10-1-1) vs. Dallas Highland Park (12-0)

Game Recap: Through the first two and half quarters it looked as if Highland Park was going to advance to the semifinal round. Three Plano turnovers and offensive domination from the Scots spotted Highland Park a 28-0 lead. Then the tide started to turn in the third quarter as Wildcat quarterback Steve Ulmer threw a touchdown pass and rushed for another. A 63-yard interception return by Carl Smith inched Plano closer in the fourth quarter. Plano used a flea-flicker touchdown pass with 33 seconds remaining to set up the Wildcats final decision. Tied in penetrations but behind in first downs, the Wildcats had to go for two and converted for a 29-28 lead. The Scot last ditch drive fizzled out in Wildcat territory and Plano went on to win the state title two weeks later.

 

 

Plano (12-1-1) vs. Port Neches-Groves (14-0)

Game Recap: In what was a state record at the time, 49,953 fans crammed into Texas Stadium to watch an underdog Plano team take on undefeated Port Neches-Groves for the state title. Plano raced out to a quick 10-0 lead in the first quarter on a field goal from Steven Haynes and a 12-yard touchdown run from Jeff Turner. The Indians finally responded in the second quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run from David Fry. Another Haynes field goal just before halftime gave Plano a 13-7 lead. In the second half, Port Neches-Groves cut the lead to 13-10 with a field goal from Mike Barnett. The Plano defense would hold from there to preserve the victory. With just under a minute to play, the Indians were in Plano territory when the Wildcats came up with a huge fumble recovery to seal the win. The title was the fourth for Plano.

 

 

Brownwood (13-0) vs. Bay City (12-0)

Notable Performances: Brownwood: Glen Coles (122 yards, 2TD-Rushing).
Game Recap: After falling in the state championship game a season before, Brownwood was looking for redemption. The Lions were ahead, 17-13 to begin the fourth quarter, but Bay City rallied with two Billy Booker touchdown runs to take the lead, 28-17, with just over 11 minutes remaining. Brownwood had one last rally in them as they would score on a 20-yard fourth-down pass from Scott Lancaster to Kevin Taylor with 3:39 remaining. The Lions got the ball back with just over two minutes left. A 2-yard touchdown run by Glen Coles with 26 seconds gave Brownwood the victory. Head Coach Gordon Wood would lead the Brownwood to its sixth state title a week later.

 

 

Baytown Lee (9-2) vs. La Porte (12-0)

Notable Performances: Baytown Lee: Jim Dippel (2 TD-Rushing), John Elkins (106 yards, TD-Passing); La Porte: Bubba Hill (131 yards, 4 TD-Rushing).
Game Recap: In a game that featured nine combined turnovers between the two teams, top-ranked La Porte raced out to a 21-7 lead at the halftime whistle. The two teams traded touchdowns in the third quarter as the Bulldogs headed into the fourth quarter with a 28-14 lead. The Ganders would not be denied as Jim Dippel scored two touchdowns in the final six minutes of action to give Lee a 29-28 advantage. La Porte fumbled for the third time in the game to give the Ganders the victory and advance them to the quarterfinal round.

 

 

Converse Judson (10-1-1) vs. Edinburg (10-2)

Notable Performances: Converse Judson: Roland Cravey (159 yards, 2 TD-Rushing).
Game Recap: Edinburg and defending state champion Converse Judson both brought their defense with them to the game as neither team could find the end zone in the early going. After an Edinburg interception halting a promising drive by Judson, the Bobcats marched down the field and took the lead on a 22-yards touchdown pass from John Paul Cantu to Steve Alaniz with 53 seconds left in the half. The second half belonged to the Rockets as they shut out Edinburg and got two rushing touchdowns by Roland Cravey to advance Converse Judson to the State Quarterfinals.

 

 

Hamlin vs. Panhandle

Panhandle 7, Hamlin 7 (Panhandle won on penetrations, 2-1)
Game Recap: On the final play of the third quarter Hamlin punter Mike Howerton pinned Panhandle at its 1-yard line on a 59-yard punt. Panhandle never gave the ball back embarking on a drive that lasted the entire fourth quarter. During the stanza, the Panthers converted on seven third downs and one fourth down with the drive ending at the 11-yard line. That gave Panhandle their second penetration and the tiebreaker to advance to the state semifinals.

 

 

Daingerfield (14-0-1) vs. Castroville Medina Valley (15-0)

Castroville Medina Valley 21, Daingerfield 13 Box Score
Game Recap: Defending state champion Daingerfield came into the state title matchup riding a 31-game winning streak and a first quarter touchdown looked to be more of the same for the Tigers. Albert Lopez scampered four yards to knot the score, and a 31-yard touchdown pass from Bill Tschirhart to Mickey Barbs put the Panthers ahead, 14-7 at halftime. Michael Kempf opened the second half by blasting off on a 92-yard kickoff return to put Medina Valley ahead, 21-7. The Tigers inched closer with a fourth quarter touchdown, but an interception and fumble recovery staved off two Daingerfield drives and gave Medina Valley its only football state championship.

 

 

 Crosby (1-2) vs. Brenham (3-0)

Notable Performances: Brenham: Chip Matejowsky (227 yards, 3TD-Passing), Vernon Rogers (105 yards, TD-Rushing). Crosby: James Cartwright (331 yards, TD-Rushing), Robert Yarbrough (221 yards, 3TD-Passing), Kendall Lewis (74 yards, 3TD-Receiving).
Game Recap: Down by 26 points at halftime, undefeated Brenham rallied behind quarterback Chip Matejowsky to score 42 second-half points to defeat Crosby, 48-45 in a non-district matchup at Cub Stadium. Matejowsky rallied the Cubs in the fourth quarter with a 54-yard touchdown pass to Ted Barnhill with 4:59 left in the game. He then found Sean Cooper for a 67-yard strike 1:19 remaining for the winning score.

Game Recap: Tied 14-14 in the fourth quarter, Bremond’s Tim Scott raced 90 yards for a touchdown with 5:23 left in the contest. Wheeler responded with a long scoring drive which was capped off by a 1-yard plunge by Bubba Smith with 1:23 remaining. The Mustangs went for two and failed to trail, 21-20. However, Wheeler recovered the ensuing onside kick and drove deep into Tiger territory with time winding down. The Mustangs field goal try with seven seconds was blocked but Bremond was offsides on the play. Sam Zepeda capitalized on the penalty, drilling a 19-yard field goal with no time on the clock to win the state championship for Wheeler.

Refugio’s Willie Mack Garza finally broke the drought on a 1-yard jaunt with 8:40 left in the contest. A methodical drive by Lorena ended with a 35-yard touchdown pass from Kellis Sampson to Kyle Allred. The Leopards went for two and connected for an 8-7 lead with just 1:33 left to play. The Bobcats raced down the field, and in the closing seconds, missed a 32-yard field goal attempt that gave Lorena the title.

Game Recap: Fort Hancock came into the game with a 70-game winning streak and four-straight state championships. An upstart Panther Creek squad was looking for the upset. The game started with Fort Hancock capitalizing on two Panther Creek turnovers with a pair of touchdowns for a 12-0 lead. However, the Panthers were unfazed, scoring three times before halftime to take a 22-12 lead into the break. The Mustangs would score first in the second half to cut the lead to 22-20, but Panther Creek responded with three scoring drives to put the game out of reach. Even though the Panther offense put up monster numbers, the defense held a potent Fort Hancock attack to its lowest output of the season.

Calallen fought back with a touchdown run from Michael Booker in the fourth quarter and after a La Marque turnover, Wes Danaher scored from 14 yards out to give the lead back to the Wildcats at 31-27 with 1:09 remaining. La Marque showed no quit as the Cougars chewed up yardage in a hurry and won the game on a 9-yard pass from Lyle Fattig to Byron Jones with three seconds remaining.

There were four lead changes in the fourth quarter. Aldine MacArthur had taken the lead with 3:13 left in the game on a 8-yard touchdown run by Delbert Garner. That set up the clutch drive by the Farmers which gave them their first state title in school history.

Tyler’s Roderick Dunn, who had fumbled twice on the previous onside kicks, redeemed himself with a mystifying 97-yard kickoff return to snuff out the Plano East comeback and advance the Lions to the state quarterfinals.

Game Recap: In a rematch, La Marque was looking for revenge after losing to Stephenville in the state title game a season before. The Cougars controlled the game in the first half, taking a 14-0 advantage at halftime on the strength of two scoring runs by Derrick Foster. In the third quarter, the Yellowjackets got in the scoring column with a field goal and a 59-yard pass from Glenn Odell to Jeff Thompson to cut the lead to 14-11. A Russell Bynum field goal pushed the La Marque lead to 17-11, heading into the fourth quarter. The final quarter was all Stephenville as the Yellowjackets outscored the Cougars, 21-0 to capture the school’s second-straight title.

In a matchup of two unbeatens, the Yellowjackets took a 14-6 lead after the first half play. Port Neches-Groves, who had also won three state titles, cut the lead to 14-12 midway through the third quarter on a 41-yard run by Bo Wortham. Stephenville’s Kendall Briles answered, scoring his third touchdown of the game on a 15-yard run to equalize before another Yellowjacket touchdown drive midway through the fourth quarter put the game away.

Two long touchdown runs by Mart’s Quan Cosby in the second half gave the Panthers a chance, but another Celina touchdown pass from Herrin to Jordan Martin was enough give the Bobcats their fifth title in school history.

Ennis only ran the ball twice the entire game.

After both teams matched each other’s score in the first two overtimes, La Marque’s Russell Ball gave the Cougars a 43-35 lead in the third overtime. La Marque then forced a fourth-down fumble to win the game.

Terry finished the game with 254 yards passing with two touchdowns to go along with his 94 yards rushing. The Scots’ John Stephen Jones went to work, leading his team on two touchdown drives that ended with him scoring a touchdown and passing for another. The final touchdown came with 34 seconds remaining. Manvel’s last effort came us just short as Jalen Preston was tackled at the Highland Park one-yard line as the clock ran out.

College Station’s DaDa Anderson (Offensive MVP) put the Cougars back in front with a six-yard run just before the start of the fourth quarter. The College Station defense took it from there shutting down the potent Aledo offense in the fourth quarter.

Johnston's final game before passing away due medical re
