All 11-man Football Championships to be Held at Cowboys Stadium

By Mark Cousins, Athletic Director | Tuesday, December 06, 2011 9:38 AM

It seems like just yesterday that it was Aug. 1 and schools were beginning volleyball and football practice and readying themselves for another challenging and successful school year.

It is hard to believe that we are now into the final month of 2011 and closing out the first semester of the 2011-12 school year. The UIL Athletic Department has already conducted successful championships in Team Tennis, Cross Country and Volleyball and is busily preparing for the football state championships that are taking place over the next couple of weeks.

For the first time in the history of UIL Football State Championships, since UIL began crowing champions in multiple conferences, all 11-man football state championship games will be held at a single site, Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. Teams in Conferences 1A through 5A will compete for a state title in what many consider to be the premier football facility in the world.

The schedule for Cowboys Stadium is as follows:

  • Dec. 9 – 3A Division I (tickets cost $12)
  • Dec. 15 – 1A 11-man, Division I and II, 2A Division I ($15)
  • Dec. 16 – 2A Division II, 3A Division II, 4A Division I ($15)
  • Dec. 17 – 4A Division II, 5A Division I and II ($15)

Additionally, the Football State Championship games in Conference 1A Six Man will be conducted at Shotwell Stadium in Abilene and hosted by Abilene Independent School District.

The schedule for Shotwell Stadium in Abilene is as follows:

  • Dec. 10 – 1A 6-man, Division I and II ($5 for students, $10 for adult)

In 2010, football state championship games were all played in the DFW metropolitan area, with 1A and 2A 11-man games played at Newsom Stadium and 3A-5A games at Cowboys Stadium. All involved seem pleased with the setup and the proximity of all of the championships games.

When the opportunity arose to host all the games at Cowboys Stadium, UIL staff felt it would benefit all member schools to create a championship tournament environment for our football state championships similar to other UIL team sport championships.

Additional information on the football championships, including the broadcast schedule as well as the opportunity to purchase tickets for the 11-man games at Cowboys Stadium is available on the UIL web site, on the Football Championships page.
