Intern Receives Division Award

At the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement All-Division May Staff Meeting, UIL intern Julianne Coyne received the Rose Martinez Student Excellence Award.
The DDCE gave three students the award for excellent service to the University and division.
For the past two years, Julianne has served as the journalism intern, working with Jeanne Acton, the journalism director and ILPC director.
“As my intern, she has spent the majority of her time writing, designing and editing stories and copy for me,” Acton said. “For everything she does, Julianne uses a critical mind and watchful eyes. She sees potential problems long before they happen.”
Julianne graduated this May with a degree in public relations, and Acton said she will be missed greatly at the UIL.
“Julianne is an integral part of the University Interscholastic League and the Interscholastic League Press Conference,” Acton said. “Without her, I am not sure how effective I will be in running the state contests and conventions.”
Luckily, Julianne plans to stay at UIL through the summer.
“She is just an amazing young woman,” Acton said. “No matter what life path she chooses, she will do well.”
While her next year is not set in stone, Julianne knows her future will include an advanced degree.
“Because I finished college in three years, I wanted to take some time to figure out what I really want to do before I go to grad school,” Julianne said. “I want to spend some time writing and working before mapping out my future.”
Julianne said working at the League has been a highlight of her college career.
“I’m really going to miss being a UIL employee,” Julianne said. “The people I get to work with are so terrific, and it’s great going to work and knowing that I’m doing something to help students in Texas learn.”
UIL intern Sydney VanBerg said Julianne’s coworkers will miss her, too.
“Julianne has certainly proven her capabilities and talents as one of the most helpful employees in this office,” VanBerg said. “She works for Jeanne, but really, she does so much more. She makes a world of difference around here.”
