OAP Enrollment Hits Record Mark

By Luis Munoz, Theatre Director | Tuesday, October 26, 2010 11:55 AM

Enrollment in the 2010-11 One-Act Play Contest has reached an all-time record enrollment of 1223. In 2007 we had 1205 schools. I want to thank all of the schools who enrolled and verified their entries in a timely manner.

The UIL Legislative Council passed two amendments to the Constitution and Contest Rules on Monday, Oct.18. Both of these changes will take effect August of 2011.

Clinics
The first change restricts the total number of sessions allowed and the number of school days missed for One-Act Play festivals and non-UIL One-Act Play contests. Beginning August of 2011, OAP companies are limited to a maximum of four sessions at non-UIL One-Act Play contests or festivals. No more than three sessions at non-UIL One-Act Play contests or festivals are permitted during school days. As in previous years, companies are restricted to no more than two sessions with the same clinician per school year. Each session cannot exceed two hours and must include a performance of the play.

Panel Judging in 2012
Beginning in the 2011-2012 school year, panel judging will be used at all regional and state contests. The amended 1033(d)(3) will require that oral critiques be given after the results are announced. The League will be working on the specific policies and procedures involved and will include them in the 19th edition of the Handbook for One-Act Play or an addendum to the 18th edition.

Theatrefest
This year’s Theatrefest will provide hundreds of opportunities for OAP directors to improve their skills in directing, cutting and designing. The UIL scheduled the Contest Management Workshop for Saturday, Jan. 29. Last year, directors requested that we extend the length of this workshop in order to cover more complex issues and more subject areas. Dr. Jerry Ivins, San Jac Central and Troy Tinney, Waco ISD will conduct the workshop. Both have served as contest managers for several years and should be able to provide great insight into the process.

The OAP A-Z workshop is also scheduled for Saturday. This year’s workshop will include five sessions. The noon session will be dedicated to introducing this year’s five state judges. Beverly Murray (1A), Aaron Adair (2A), Rod Caspers (3A), Charles Falcon (4A) and Kelly Russell (5A) will be there to discuss their judging philosophies and to take questions from any directors and students in attendance. The other session will feature a step-by-step directing demonstration with Larry Wisdom. Larry will discuss and direct a scene using novice actors. Strategies and choices will be discussed throughout the process. This workshop is designed for those with little or no experience in directing.

The TETAAO Judges Accreditation workshop is scheduled for Sunday. We will begin the registration process for new judges at 9 a.m. in the Imperial Ballroom. The workshop will include scenes performed by Pearland High School and Hempstead High School. Jason Kruger and Marianna Jones will be serving as the adjudicators. Please contact any retired teachers, new college faculty, community theatre directors, etc. who you think will make good judges. They need to hear from you.
