Texas advisers and students have a unique opportunity this year. They can attend a national journalism convention in their own state.
The JEA/NSPA Fall National High School Journalism Convention will be held Nov. 15-18 in San Antonio at the Marriott Rivercenter and Riverwalk and the Convention Center across the street.
It’s been 10 years since Texas hosted a national convention. Let’s show the nation how much we support and embrace scholastic journalism by heading to San Antonio in November.
The Texas delegation, including chairs Pat Gathright and Rhonda Moore, has been working for more than two years to plan an exciting convention for scholastic journalists and their advisers.
This is an opportunity you shouldn’t miss. The convention planners are expecting more than 4,000 students and will offer hundreds of break-out sessions and speakers for students and advisers. In addition, pre-convention workshops will be offered Thursday.
Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Rodolfo Gonzalez, who has been working for newspapers since 1989, will keynote the opening session on Thursday. Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram will deliver the Friday keynote. This is Williams’ 19th season covering the NFL, including the past 13 for the Star-Telegram.
If you register on or before Oct. 25, the cost per delegate is $90 for JEA and NSPA members, and $110 for nonmembers. Hotel rates range from $175 for a single or double to $199 for a trip or quad.
In addition to the speakers, your student will have the opportunity to participate in several contests — a Scavenger Hunt Photo Contest, write-offs, Best of Show and the quiz bowl. You also can register for an on-site critique for your publication.
