FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AUSTIN, TX – The five winners of the 2009-10 UIL Lone Star Cup were announced Thursday.

With three state championships in the 2009-10 season, Conroe The Woodlands High School has captured its fourth Class 5A Lone Star Cup victory in five years. The Highlanders three state titles, most among Lone Star Cup winners, came in boys cross-country, boys swimming and diving and girls soccer.

Friendswood High School performed well throughout the season in athletic and music competitions, however it was the school’s victory at the State Academic Meet that sealed its second consecutive Lone Star Cup in Class 4A. Friendswood’s academic state championship was its fifth consecutive and eighth overall.

Lucas Lovejoy High School captured the state volleyball championship and earned two second-place finishes in boys and girls cross country en route to its first-ever Lone Star Cup victory. The Leopards held the top spot in Class 3A the entire season thanks to lengthy playoff runs in boys basketball, softball and baseball.

A state championship in girls basketball moved Brock High School up the leader board but it was the state tournament appearances by the softball and baseball teams that propelled the Eagles to the top of the standings. Brock joins Holliday High School as only the second Class 2A school to win back-to-back Lone Star Cups.

Cayuga High School held off four-time Class 1A champion Lindsay High School to win its first-ever Lone Star Cup. The Wildcats won state titles in football and boys basketball and made lengthy playoff runs in volleyball and baseball.

The UIL Lone Star Cuprecognizes five high schools (one in each of the five UIL classifications) based on their overall team achievement in a variety of sanctioned athletic and academic championships. All UIL member high schools in good standing are included for contention for the UIL Lone Star Cup.

The UIL Lone Star Cup program began during the 1997-98 season.
