FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
AUSTIN, Texas – The University Interscholastic League announced the six winners of the 2023-24 UIL Lone Star Cup presented by Texas Farm Bureau Insurance.
Southlake Carroll claimed the Conference 6A Lone Star Cup title, bolstered by a state title in boys cross country. The Dragons also finished as state runner-up in girls cross country, and in both girls and boys swimming and diving. Additionally, they advanced to the state semifinals in football and reached the regional semifinals in girls basketball, girls soccer and volleyball. Southlake Carroll is now tied for third in Lone Star Cup titles with nine, having won two of the last three titles in Conference 6A.
After finishing as runner-up the previous two years, Lucas Lovejoy captured its third Conference 5A Lone Star Cup title. The Leopards brought home state titles in both boys and girls cross country, as well as in volleyball. They also finished as state runner-up in baseball, reached the regional finals in football, the regional semifinals in girls soccer and won a district championship in academics.
After securing their first Lone Star Cup title in 2022-23, Canyon Randall made it two in a row with a repeat title in Conference 4A. The Raiders took home state championships in girls cross country and boys wrestling and captured the most victories in spring tennis on their way to 117 points, the most of any conference. Canyon Randall also finished as state runner-up in volleyball, reached the state semifinals in boys basketball and captured a regional championship in academics.
After a 19-year drought, Holliday won the Conference 3A Lone Star Cup title, its sixth overall. The Eagles secured the state title in boys cross country, advanced to the state semifinals in boys basketball and placed fourth at State Marching Band. They also achieved third in both boys and girls track and field. In academics, Holliday excelled by winning a district title and finishing third at the State Academic Meet.
After finishing as runner-up in the Conference 2A Lone Star Cup standings the past two years, Shiner reclaimed the top spot by winning its fifth title. State championships in softball and one-act play spearheaded their success. Additionally, they finished fourth at State Marching Band and advanced to the regional semifinals in girls basketball. Shiner also notched a district championship in academics.
Gail Borden County rallied down the stretch in the 2023-24 school year, amassing a district, regional and state championship in academics. The Coyotes also won a state championship in both boys golf and congress, and advanced to the regional finals in football and softball and the regional semifinals in girls basketball. These achievements culminated in Gail Borden County winning its first-ever Lone Star Cup title, taking home honors in Conference 1A.
The UIL Lone Star Cup program began during the 1997-98 school year and recognizes six high schools (one in each of the six UIL conferences) based on their overall team achievement in a variety of sanctioned academic, athletic and music championships. All UIL member high schools in good standing are included in contention for the UIL Lone Star Cup. Trophy presentations will take place in the fall at events chosen by the winning schools.
