FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AUSTIN, Texas – The 2012 UIL Volleyball State Championships will be held at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland, the UIL announced Thursday.

Strahan Coliseum on the campus of Texas State University has hosted the UIL Volleyball State Championships since 2000 when it was moved from Austin ISD’s Burger Center. Gregory Gymnasium on the campus of The University of Texas at Austin is the only other venue to host the volleyball state tournament, which it did from 1967-85.

“The Culwell Center is a first-class venue and we believe it will serve as a tremendous host for the UIL Volleyball State Championships,” said UIL Director of Athletics Dr. Mark Cousins. “We look forward to working closely with Garland ISD in creating a great experience for the schools, fans and students involved in what we believe will be a very successful UIL state championship tournament.”

“We are extremely excited about the opportunity to host the UIL Volleyball State Championships at the Culwell Center,” Garland ISD Superintendent Dr. Curtis Culwell said. “UIL championship events make memories that last a lifetime. Garland ISD and the North Texas area are privileged to host this premiere championship event.”

Volleyball has been a UIL-sanctioned sport since 1967 with state champions crowned annually in Conferences 1A-5A. The 2012 UIL Volleyball State Championships will be held Nov. 15-17, 2012.
