FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Dr. David Stevens, former director of fine arts for Keller ISD, has been named Director of Academics for the University Interscholastic League, it was announced Tuesday.
Stevens replaced Treva Dayton who retired on January 31, 2012.
“UIL activities have the ability to inspire a student to fully realize his or her potential,” said Stevens. “It is an honor to be selected as the academic director of the University Interscholastic League and I hope my work will offer a training ground for tomorrow’s leaders.”
Prior to his role as director of fine arts at Keller ISD, Stevens served as Theatre Director at Southlake Carroll High School, Highland Park High School and San Angelo Central High School. His tenure includes considerable experience with the UIL as he has served as spring meet chair for two UIL districts and coordinated the academic and one-act play contests. During his nine years as a high school teacher, he directed five one-act play productions that advanced to the UIL State Meet, winning the state championship twice and first runner-up twice. As the UIL academic coordinator for Southlake Carroll, he led the UIL team to two state academic championships. He is a frequent workshop presenter and clinician for UIL One-Act Play directors and Student Activities Conferences.
Stevens holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Texas at Austin, a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Oklahoma and a Doctorate of Education from the University of North Texas. He has been awarded numerous academic fellowships and grants and was named the Founders’ Award winner for the Texas Educational Theatre Association in 2012, Outstanding Art Supervisor/Administrator for the Texas Educational Art Association in 2011 and was named Teacher of the Year at Southlake Carroll High School in 2002.
“Dr. David Stevens has extensive knowledge of UIL academic contests and has coached students to the highest level of state competition,” said UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt. “His leadership will help UIL academics continue to succeed in the future, and the League is privileged to have him.”
In being named UIL academic director, Stevens becomes only the fifth person in the League’s 102-year history to head the academic department of the organization.
