FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
AUSTIN, TX— The UIL is issuing the following statement regarding the procedures for UIL activities affected by Hurricane Ike:
Football Games-
Varsity district football games shall be played on a schedule and at times and locations as determined by the District Executive Committee. Varsity district football games will be allowed an exception to the five day rule through Saturday, October 4th. Varsity district football games may be played with four days in between, rather than five, through Saturday, October 4th.
After Saturday October 4th, all football games will be subject to the five-day rule unless the UIL office extends the exception to the five-day rule.
District Executive Committees also have the option to cancel games and not reschedule them either by mutual consent of the two schools or by majority vote of the committee if the schools do not agree.
District Executive Committees utilizing the five-day rule exception to play within four days must notify the UIL office of their schedule for games and the use of the exception. Schools should contact the UIL office with information on the rescheduling of varsity district games and use of the exception to the five-day rule. Information may also be emailed to uilath@uts.cc.utexas.edu
Non-district varsity football games will also be allowed an exception to the five-day rule through Saturday, October 4th, with mutual agreement between both schools. Non-district football games, with mutual agreement between both schools, may be played with four days in between, rather than five, through Saturday, October 4th.
All sub-varsity games (including junior high games) that are (or were) not played as scheduled shall be cancelled and not rescheduled unless both schools have an open date later in the season.
The five-day rule will apply to all football games at the sub varsity (including junior high) levels. Teams playing Monday could not play again until Saturday. Teams playing Tuesday or Wednesday could not play again until the following Monday, etc.
District Tie-Breaking Procedures for Football
Schools unable to reschedule district varsity games due to circumstances involving Hurricane Ike shall not be required to forfeit games. District Executive Committees must convene and consider all district tie-breaking procedures, including selecting playoff representatives if replaying games is not an option.
Volleyball Matches-
Until October 4th, cancelled varsity district volleyball matches are to be rescheduled and played on a date determined by the district executive committee (DEC). This can be decided by mutual agreement between the two schools, or if agreement is not reached, the DEC will determine date, place and time for the rescheduled matches.
These postponed varsity district volleyball matches will be allowed as exceptions to both the school week and calendar week limits as long as they are played on the date assigned by mutual agreement or by the DEC (i.e. DEC determines next available date).
After Saturday October 4th, all volleyball games will be subject to the school week and calendar week limitations unless the UIL office extends the exception to those limitations.
All sub-varsity volleyball matches (including junior high), and varsity non-district volleyball matches that are not played as scheduled shall be cancelled and not rescheduled unless both schools have an open date later in the season. No sub-varsity volleyball matches (including junior high matches) or varsity non-district matches qualify for exceptions to the school week or calendar week limits.
District Tie-Breaking Procedures for Volleyball
The District Executive Committee of districts in hurricane affected areas could decide to cancel a portion of the district schedule if schools in the district are adversely affected by the storm. Schools unable to reschedule district varsity volleyball matches due to circumstances involving Hurricane Ike shall not be required to forfeit games. District Executive Committees must convene and consider all district tie-breaking procedures, including selecting playoff representatives if replaying matches is not an option.
Other UIL Activities
Other UIL activities affected by Hurricane Ike follow the same rule for rescheduling and playing varsity district contests as contained in the UIL Constitution and Contest Rules.
District varsity games/matches postponed by weather or public disaster (not including illness) shall be rescheduled on the next date, other than Sunday, on which another district game is not scheduled. In the event weather or public disaster forces the makeup game to be rescheduled it shall be rescheduled on the next date as described earlier. These makeup games may be played as exceptions to the school week and calendar week limitations (if applicable). District varsity games/matches that are postponed by weather or public disaster, and not played on the next available date, shall be rescheduled and played on a date determined by the district executive committee.
The exceptions noted above are only applicable to schools that were affected by circumstances arising in association with Hurricane Ike.
