AUSTIN -- The University Interscholastic League has selected Ray Zepeda to fill the role of UIL director of athletics. Currently Athletic Director for Cypress-Fairbanks ISD, Zepeda will begin his role at UIL in June where he will oversee the UIL athletic department, administer athletic activities for UIL member schools and work with stakeholders to promote interscholastic athletics across Texas.
“It is a tremendous honor and privilege to be selected to be the next director of athletics for the University Interscholastic League,” said Zepeda. “The UIL is the premier interscholastic student activities association in the United States. I cannot wait to join their team and partner with their tremendous staff to positively serve the student-athletes, coaches and athletic administrators of this great state. I also look forward to working with the many coaching and athletic administration associations across the state to serve their needs and to continue to make Texas the leader in public interscholastic athletics in the nation.”
Zepeda brings thirty years of public education experience to the UIL, nineteen of them as head coach, athletic coordinator or athletic director. Prior to his ten years of service at Cypress-Fairbanks ISD, Zepeda held positions at Galena Park ISD, Mathis ISD, Houston ISD and Corpus Christi ISD. Zepeda holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology from Texas A&M University and a Master's Degree in Educational Administration from Texas Southern University. He is a graduate of Corpus Christi Flour Bluff High School where he participated in football and baseball.
“Going back to his time as a student-athlete, Ray Zepeda has been a passionate advocate for UIL athletics,” said UIL Executive Director, Dr. Charles Breithaupt. “His motivation, expertise and proven success in his previous roles is something UIL member schools and students will greatly benefit from.”
