UIL Announces H-E-B Pharmacy-UIL Community Service Award Winners

AUSTIN, TX—The University Interscholastic League, in conjunction with H-E-B
Pharmacy, is pleased to announce that 12 schools have been selected as the
2005 H-E-B Pharmacy-UIL Community Service Award winners and runners-up.

The schools selected include the following:
1A First Place—New Home High School
1A Second Place—Granger High School
2A First Place—Hico High School
2A Second Place—Shallowater High School
3A First Place—Devine High School
4A First Place—Sulphur Springs High School
4A Second Place—Mission Veteran’s Memorial High School
5A First Place—Klein Collins High School
5A Second Place—San Antonio Taft High School
First Place Healthcare Community Service Award—Crandall High School
Second Place Healthcare Community Service Award – San Angelo Central High
School

Now in its third year, the H-E-B Pharmacy-UIL Community Service Award was
created to reward UIL member schools for enhancing their community’s quality
of life.  Each first place school will receive $1,000 and a memento to
commemorate the award, while the runners-up will receive a $500 award.
Presentations of the first place awards will take place at football games
selected by the schools during the 2005 season.

The health-care related service project category was added last year to
further H-E-B Pharmacy’s mission to be the provider of choice for a
patient’s pharmacy healthcare needs.  The winner of the Healthcare Community
Service Award will receive $5,000 and a memento, and the runner up of the
Healthcare Award will receive $2,500.

"H-E-B Pharmacy is proud to join with the UIL in recognizing the
contributions of high school students throughout the state of Texas to their
communities,” said H-E-B Director of Pharmacy Marketing and Retail
Operations Donna Montemayor.  “We believe that it is essential to give back
to the areas we live and work in, and are excited about the opportunity to
work with the UIL to promote community service initiatives through our Texas
schools. Together we will make our communities better."

“The extraordinary accomplishments of our students in UIL athletic,
academic, and fine arts activities are recognized on a daily basis across
the state.  We felt it was time to recognize these same students for their
achievements in their own communities,” said UIL Director Dr. Bill Farney.

All UIL member schools may compete for the H-E-B Pharmacy-UIL Community
Service Award.  A school’s organized volunteerism with a large percentage of
their student population aimed at charitable causes in their own communities
weighed heavily in determining the winners.
