AUSTIN, TX- The Conference 5A Division I & II championship football games will be played at a designated site for the 2006 and 2007 seasons after approval from the Legislative Council of the UIL on Monday.
The UIL Legislative Council authorized the UIL staff to designate a site for both the Division I and Division II Conference 5A football games to be played in the 2006 and 2007 football seasons. The Legislative Council also approved the formation of an ad hoc committee, appointed by the Legislative Council Chair, and composed of members from the Texas High School Coaches Association, Texas High School Athletic Directors Association, Conference 5A coaches and Legislative Council members.
After the site is determined by the UIL staff, the ad hoc committee will determine the specifics of the game such as time, ticket prices and reimbursement for travel expenses.
The authorization of the designated site and formation of the ad hoc committee passed with no opposition.
In other action Monday, the UIL Legislative Council approved a rule change regarding coin flipsdetermining football playoff sites. The new rule states that a school cannot be forced to flip for a football playoff venue that cannot adequately accommodate their fans. The UIL will make the determination of whether or not a venue is adequate based on the fan attendance at the school's previous football games.
“We felt like this was a good preventative measure to protect our schools against being forced intoa situation where they couldn't accommodate their fans,” said UIL Legislative Chairman Charles Butcher. “As school administrators, we know the importance of community support, and we wanted to provide our coaches with a rule they could fall back on to ensure their community had a chance to cheer them on.”
