AUSTIN, TX — The University Interscholastic League will honor Austin Westlake High School on Friday, August 26 for its 2016 Conference 6A UIL Lone Star Cup victory. The UIL Lone Star Cup trophy presentation will take place prior to Austin Westlake’s football game against Katy High School at Chaparral Stadium at 7:05 p.m.
“The UIL Lone Star Cup honors the best overall academic, athletic and music programs in the state of Texas,” said UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt. “It takes contributions from every student, teacher and coach in all facets of UIL competition to win this outstanding award. The winning schools and communities should be proud of this incredible achievement.”
With a state championship in girls swimming & diving and state runners-up in football, boys swimming & diving and girls golf, Austin Westlake earned 94 total Lone Star Cup points for the 2015-16 school year. The Chaparrals also earned points in UIL academics, marching band, team tennis, volleyball, boys wrestling, girls & boys basketball, girls soccer, boys golf, softball and baseball. Austin Westlake last won the UIL Lone Star Cup in 2002 in Conference 5A.
The UIL Lone Star Cup is awarded annually to six high schools, one in each of the six UIL classifications (1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A and 6A), based on their team performance in district and state championships. The winning schools in each classification receive the UIL Lone Star Cup trophy and a $1,000 scholarship, also presented by the UIL. The UIL Lone Star Cup program began during the 1997-98 school year.
Presentations for 2016 UIL Lone Star Cup winners Happy, Windthorst, Brock, Argyle and Austin Vandegrift will occur later this fall.
