AUSTIN, TX— The University Interscholastic League will honor Friendswood High School on Friday, September 5 for its 2014 Class 4A UIL Lone Star Cup victory. The Lone Star Cup trophy presentation will take place at halftime of Friendswood’s football game against George Ranch High School at Henry Winston Stadium, which begins at 7 p.m.
“The UIL Lone Star Cup honors the best overall academic, athletic and music programs in the state of Texas,” said UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt. “It takes contributions from every student, teacher and coach in all facets of UIL competition to win this outstanding award. The winning schools and communities should be proud of this incredible achievement.”
With state semifinalist teams in girls soccer and volleyball, a state runner-up finish in boys swimming and diving and a top five finish at state in academics and marching band, Friendswood earned 89 total Lone Star Cup points for the 2013-14 school year. The Mustangs also earned points in UIL football, boys and girls basketball, boys soccer, softball and baseball. This is the third UIL Lone Star Cup victory for Friendswood High School.
The UIL Lone Star Cup is awarded annually to five high schools, one in each of the five UIL classifications (1A, 2A, 3A, 4A and 5A), based on their team performance in district and state championships. The winning schools in each classification receive the UIL Lone Star Cup trophy and a $1,000 scholarship, also presented by the UIL. UIL Director of Athletics Dr. Mark Cousins and UIL Assistant Athletic Director Darryl Beasley will be on hand to make the presentation.
The UIL Lone Star Cup program began during the 1997-98 season.
