FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
AUSTIN, TX—A new Interim Director of Athletics for the University Interscholastic League has been named, the UIL announced today.
Cliff Odenwald resigned his position as UIL Director of Athletics to pursue other opportunities effective December 31, 2010. Odenwald joined the UIL as Associate Director of Athletics in 2007 and was named Director of Athletics for the UIL in February 2009. Through his leadership, the UIL implemented the largest steroid-testing program in the world, as mandated by the state legislature and completed the UIL centennial anniversary celebrations. During his tenure, Odenwald accomplished many remarkable tasks, including his involvement in the latest reclassification and realignment, and pre-determined sites for all UIL state football championships.
The UIL has named Dr. Mark Cousins the Interim Director of Athletics, effective immediately. Dr. Cousins is an expert on the UIL Constitution & Contest Rules and has great insight into the dynamics of the athletic programs. He began his career at the UIL in 1994 while completing his masters degree from the University of Texas at Austin. He also completed his doctorate degree while working at the UIL, and has gained a unique perspective working in the athletic department over the years. He served as director of several sports prior to his appointment as UIL Director of Policy in 2009. Dr. Cousins will serve in this capacity on an interim basis until further notice.
“Cliff made great contributions to the organization during his tenure at the UIL. His continued commitment to the youth of this state is appreciated, and I respect his decision to follow another career path and wish him only the best,” said UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt. “The experience Dr. Cousins has gained during his time at the UIL will help lead us through this transitional period until we are able to hire an Athletic Director on a permanent basis. I have every confidence in him and his abilities to get the job done.”
