FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AUSTIN, TX - The Houston Washington High School girls basketball team will have 8 of its 10 previously forfeited games reinstated, while 6 forfeits for the Houston Madison High School girls basketball team stand after decisions were handed down by the State Executive Committee of the University Interscholastic League Thursday.

The State Executive Committee denied the appeal for the exception to the automatic forfeiture rule by Madison High School, therefore requiring the Madison girls basketball team to forfeit all six games in which an ineligible player participated.  The forfeits include three district basketball games.

Additionally, the Washington High School girls basketball team had eight games reinstated by the State Executive Committee.  Previously, Washington had forfeited ten games for allowing an ineligible student to participate.  The eight reinstated games were played after the District 22-4A Executive Committee ruled the student eligible to participate in varsity athletics on December 17.  On February 7, the district executive committee reversed its ruling on the student’s eligibility, thereby making her ineligible for varsity athletics.  The two forfeitures that will remain are the result of the student’s participation prior to being approved for varsity athletics by the district executive committee.  Washington High School and its girls basketball coach were each issued a public reprimand and two years probation for failure to properly verify the student’s eligibility.

In other action, two student athletes at Austin Bowie High School will retain their eligibility after the State Executive Committee found them eligible for varsity athletics.
