FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The State Executive Committee of the University Interscholastic League issued penalties to coaches and sponsors for violations of UIL rules and handed down decisions on student-athlete eligibility on Wednesday.
Eagle Pass High School coach Reynol Mendoza was issued a public reprimand and a three-year probation for discrepancies in the acquisition of officials during the 2013 baseball playoffs. Mendoza was also issued a suspension for the first six district games of the next baseball season.
Brownsville Veterans Memorial Coach Valentin Paz was issued a public reprimand and two years probation for violations of League rules prohibiting recruiting.
Crockett High School One-Act Play sponsor Janet Walker was issued a public reprimand and a three-year probation for violations of One-Act Play rules.
In other action, students from Corpus Christi Ray High School and Desoto High School were granted appeals for varsity eligibility, overturning the previous ruling of the district executive committees. After hearing testimony from all interested parties, it was ruled that the student-athletes did not change schools for athletic purposes.
