The author has indicated that her literary work The House on Mango Street “was an experiment fusing two genres”. Because of the blending of prose and poetry resulting in not being definitively a work of prose or a work of poetry, this book should not be used in high school UIL Oral Interpretation Prose or Poetry contests.
